(I hope you understand my bad english!)
I am not angry about the project, but I think they are solving the open source problem in the wrong way. They forget the basic rule of crowdsourcing: trust.
Until now, they did everything correct. They created a good product with a great package, send it to everyone (maybe with delay, but it is normal), than created the forum and github project with the source. Everything was like they imagine when they started it!
Then someone says: “Hey, where is the code of this library?” If I assume they didn’t do it with bad faith, I can see some of then saying: “F*ck! I can’t believe we didn’t see this problem before!!”
Then they realize that need a solution. I see their side; there is no easy choice here. Open the source is out of question. There are some serious copyrights here. For me, what they choice now was hidden the problem! And use some denial of reality hoping that people will forget about it. But this will make their image really bad! They need to remember the basic rule of crowdsourcing: trust!
In my humble opinion, I think they need to assume this mistake!!! Just record a video and say: “People, we really want to make everything open source, but we forget about the library X. If we can go back in time, we will make another choices, but we can’t now!”
Everyone make mistakes in life! I think if they assume it and say what they can do now, people will not hate the project. They will understand. Someone will not like, but in general, the community will continue supporting the project! One solution can be create a place to people send their requests and bug in this closed sources and they really try hard to solve this things. This will not be an open source, but they can make the better they can!
Remember that NASA did a very bad mistake in the mirror when send the Hubble Telescope to space. If they fix it in earth, this will be cheaper than do the same thing in space! The RFduino guys are in the same way. But this is not a very bad bug in hardware or software; it is just a “bug in copyright”. Things can be worst!
This is what I think they need to do. Than reopen the github project and forum! They need to remember: they will NEVER delete the kickstarter page, so what they choice now will make a big difference for their future projects!
Then they can learn with this mistake and maybe start to think about the RFDuino 2.0 in a truly 100% open source.
Good luck.
